One-on-One Support for Digital SAT Math

The SAT Math section covers four main areas: Algebra, Advanced Math, Problem-Solving and Data Analysis, and Geometry and Trigonometry. Algebra and Advanced Math make up the largest share of the section, while questions across all four areas assess students’ understanding, fluency, and ability to apply mathematical concepts and skills.

SAT Math Content and Skills

The Digital SAT Math section is organized into four content domains. Each domain covers specific mathematical content and assesses students’ ability to apply the related skills.

• Algebra (35% of the section): Algebra covers linear equations and inequalities in one and two variables, systems of linear equations, and linear functions. It measures students’ ability to analyze, fluently solve, and create linear equations and inequalities, as well as analyze and fluently solve equations and systems of equations using multiple techniques.
• Advanced Math (35% of the section): Advanced Math covers equivalent expressions, nonlinear equations in one variable, systems of equations in two variables, and nonlinear functions, including absolute value, quadratic, exponential, polynomial, rational, radical, and other nonlinear equations. It measures the skills and knowledge needed to progress to more advanced mathematics, including demonstrating an understanding of these nonlinear equations and functions and applying them in mathematical contexts.
• Problem-Solving and Data Analysis (15% of the section): Problem-Solving and Data Analysis covers ratios, rates, proportional relationships, units, percentages, one- and two-variable data, probability and conditional probability, sample statistics and margin of error, and statistical claims from observational studies and experiments. It measures students’ ability to apply quantitative reasoning, understand and apply unit rates, and analyze and interpret one- and two-variable data.
• Geometry and Trigonometry (15% of the section): Geometry and Trigonometry covers area and volume formulas, lines, angles, and triangles, right triangles and trigonometry, and circles. It measures students’ ability to solve problems involving these geometric and trigonometric concepts.

Test Overview

• Structure: The SAT Math section has 44 questions divided into two 35-minute modules, with 22 questions in each module.
• Question Types: The section includes multiple-choice and student-produced response questions, where students enter their answers rather than select from the choices provided.
• Calculator Use: Students may use a calculator throughout the Math section, including the built-in Desmos calculator in Bluebook or an approved external calculator.
• Context Questions: Approximately 30% of Math questions are set in context, requiring students to consider a science, social studies, or real-world scenario and apply their math skills and knowledge to determine the answer.
• Adaptive Format: The Math section is adaptive. The first module contains a mix of easy, medium, and hard questions, and performance on it determines whether the second module is more difficult or less difficult.

Exam Format

The SAT is administered digitally through Bluebook. The Math section consists of two 35-minute modules, for a total testing time of 70 minutes.

• Duration: 70 minutes, divided into two 35-minute modules.
• Number of Questions: 44 questions, with 22 questions in each module.
• Scoring: The Math section is scored on a 200–800 scale and contributes to the SAT’s total score of 400–1600. There is no penalty for incorrect answers.
• Reference Sheet: A reference sheet with commonly used formulas and information is provided on-screen during the Math section.
