Since August 2019, the IB Diploma Programme has offered four Mathematics courses: Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches (SL/HL) and Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation (SL/HL). Students may study only one Mathematics course as part of their diploma. These courses are designed to meet students’ different needs, interests, abilities, and university or career goals while developing mathematical knowledge, logical, critical and creative thinking, abstraction, and generalization skills. Students are also encouraged to appreciate the international, cultural, and historical perspectives of mathematics.

What You’ll Learn

The updated IB DP Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation (AI) course will be launched in 2027, with its first assessment in May 2029. (Scroll down to see the important changes applicable to the new course.) Students completing the current course with assessments in May 2027 or May 2028 will follow the existing course and assessment pattern. Tutoring support will remain aligned with the student’s applicable course, assessment requirements, and school curriculum.

The IB Mathematics Applications and Interpretation (AI) HL course focuses on understanding and applying mathematics in a data-rich, technology-driven world, with particular emphasis on mathematical modelling, statistics, calculus, technology, problem-solving, and interpreting mathematics in meaningful real-world contexts. Students are encouraged to connect theoretical and practical mathematical concepts, solve real-world problems, and communicate and interpret their mathematical conclusions.

The Growing Stars IB Mathematics AI HL Tutoring Program follows the IB curriculum to help students develop a strong understanding across the five core areas: Number and algebra, Functions, Geometry and trigonometry, Statistics and probability, and Calculus. The program also develops investigational, problem-solving, modelling, and mathematical exploration skills, with a strong focus on using technology accurately and effectively to explore ideas and solve problems. The program incorporates Paper 3 preparation as an integral part of the HL course, with added focus on developing the problem-solving, reasoning, technology, and application skills required for this important assessment component.

The Subtopic List includes all the topics listed in the IB Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation HL subject guide. Tutoring supports all IB Mathematics assessment objectives, helping students develop knowledge and understanding, problem-solving, communication and interpretation, effective use of technology, mathematical reasoning, and inquiry skills. Students learn to apply mathematical knowledge and models in familiar, unfamiliar, abstract, open-ended, and real-world contexts, while developing the ability to organize and analyze information, investigate problems, make and test conjectures, draw conclusions, and communicate mathematical solutions clearly. The program provides targeted support for the Mathematical Exploration, Paper 3, and all other internal and external assessment requirements, while also aligning tutoring with the student’s specific school curriculum, coursework, learning materials, and assessment requirements.

Assessment Overview

External Assessment – 80% of the Final Grade

  • Paper 1 (30% of the final grade, 2 hours): Technology allowed. Compulsory short-response questions based on the syllabus.
  • Paper 2 (30% of the final grade, 2 hours): Technology allowed. Compulsory extended-response questions based on the syllabus.
  • Paper 3 (20% of the final grade, 1 hour): Technology allowed. Two compulsory extended-response problem-solving questions, providing an additional HL focus on applying mathematical models, reasoning, and problem-solving skills.

Internal Assessment (IA) – 20% of the Final Grade

  • Mathematical Exploration: An individual exploration that allows students to demonstrate the application of mathematical skills and knowledge while investigating an area of mathematics of personal interest.

Course and Assessment Updates for May 2029 Include

  • New Course Overview: The new IB DP Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation (AI) course will be launched in 2027, with its first assessment in May 2029. The updated course builds on the strengths of the current syllabus, with targeted refinements designed to provide a smooth transition while maintaining a strong focus on mathematical modelling, statistical thinking, problem-solving, inquiry, technology, and applying mathematics to real-world contexts.
  • Changes to the Course Content: The updated Mathematics AI course has a reduced syllabus, with no new content added. The changes focus on removing selected content to make the course more coherent.
  • Standard Level: Removal of logarithms and approximation of areas using the trapezoidal rule.
  • Higher Level: Removal of complex numbers, vector product, Poisson distribution, and hypothesis tests for population mean of a normal distribution, population mean of a Poisson distribution, and correlation coefficient
  • Some Important Assessment Changes: The external assessment model remains largely unchanged, with some important adjustments.
  • Paper 1 and Paper 2 (SL): The number of items is reduced, with each paper now totaling 75 marks instead of 80.
  • Paper 1 and Paper 2 (HL): The number of items is reduced, with each paper now totaling 100 marks instead of 110.
  • Paper 3 (HL only): The number of items is reduced to 50 marks instead of 55, and the examination time is reduced to 1 hour instead of 1 hour 15 minutes.
  • Internal Assessment: The Mathematical Exploration remains the core IA task. SL and HL now use the same IA assessment criteria, aligned with the DP mathematics inquiry process, including problem specification, abstraction, computation, and interpretation.
