Since August 2019, the IB Diploma Programme has offered four Mathematics courses: Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches (SL/HL) and Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation (SL/HL). Students may study only one Mathematics course as part of their diploma. These courses are designed to meet students’ different needs, interests, abilities, and university or career goals while developing mathematical knowledge, logical, critical and creative thinking, abstraction, and generalization skills. Students are also encouraged to appreciate the international, cultural, and historical perspectives of mathematics.
The IB Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches (AA) Standard Level (SL) is a rigorous Mathematics course in the IB Diploma Programme, requiring analytical thinking, mathematical reasoning, mathematical communication, and problem-solving skills. Our expert 1-on-1 tutoring program provides personalized support to help students manage the course effectively, master mathematical concepts, and prepare confidently for the Mathematical Exploration and external examinations.
Through targeted instruction, guided practice, and continuous feedback, the program helps learners achieve the key IB DP Mathematics aims by developing mathematical understanding, logical and creative thinking, abstraction and generalization, clear mathematical communication, problem-solving persistence, and the ability to apply and transfer mathematical skills to unfamiliar contexts and other areas of knowledge. Students also develop independent learning, critical reflection, and an appreciation of the cultural, historical, technological, and real-world significance of mathematics.
Start your IB Math SL – AA preparation today and achieve better college placement with expert guidance.
The new IB DP Mathematics Analysis and Approaches (AA) course will be launched in 2027, with first assessment in May 2029. Important changes applicable to the new course are detailed below. Students completing the current course with assessments in May 2027 or May 2028 will follow the existing course and assessment pattern. Tutoring support will remain aligned with the student’s applicable course, assessment requirements, and school curriculum.
The IB Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches (AA) SL course is designed around a rigorous and connected understanding of mathematics, with a strong emphasis on analytical thinking, abstract problem-solving, mathematical reasoning, and the ability to construct and communicate mathematical arguments.
The Growing Stars IB Mathematics AA SL Tutoring Program follows the IB curriculum to help students develop a strong understanding across the five core areas:
The program also develops investigational, problem-solving, modelling, and mathematical exploration skills. The Subtopic List includes all the topics listed in the IB Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches SL subject guide.
Tutoring supports all IB Mathematics assessment objectives, helping students develop knowledge and understanding, problem-solving, communication and interpretation, effective use of technology, mathematical reasoning, and inquiry skills. Students learn to apply mathematical knowledge and techniques in familiar, unfamiliar, abstract, open-ended, and real-world contexts, while developing the ability to investigate problems, construct and justify mathematical arguments, analyze information, draw and test conclusions, and communicate solutions clearly. The program provides targeted support for the Mathematical Exploration and prepares students for all internal and external assessment requirements, while also aligning tutoring with their specific school curriculum, coursework, learning materials, and assessment requirements.
External Assessment – 80% of the Final Grade
Internal Assessment (IA) – 20% of the Final Grade
New Course Overview
The new IB DP Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches (AA) course will be launched in 2027, with first assessment in May 2029. The updated course builds on the strengths of the current syllabus, with targeted refinements designed to make the course more coherent while maintaining continuity for students and teachers. It places strong emphasis on mathematical reasoning, problem-solving, inquiry, abstract thinking, algebraic skills, conceptual understanding, functions, and calculus.
Changes to the Course Content
The updated Mathematics AA course has a reduced syllabus, with no new content added. The changes focus on removing selected content to create a more coherent course.

Sessions are conducted live through our online platform using a user-interactive whiteboard, with audio and video, screen sharing, chat, and other interactive learning features to support effective online tutoring.
Absolutely. Every session is tailored to match your school's teaching sequence, prescribed textbooks, and specific learning objectives.
Yes. We offer easy scheduling designed to accommodate the demanding academic and extracurricular commitments of IB students, with the same dedicated tutor throughout the course to provide consistent, personalized, and continuous support.
No additional purchases are typically required. Our tutors utilize IB-prescribed textbooks and provide additional revision notes, custom practice questions, and past-paper resources as needed.
IB Mathematics AA SL is graded on a 1–7 scale, with 7 being the highest grade. The final grade is based on performance in the external examinations and the internally assessed Mathematical Exploration.
The external assessments contribute 80% of the final grade, consisting of Paper 1 (40%) and Paper 2 (40%).
The Mathematical Exploration contributes 20% of the final grade.
The external assessment consists of Paper 1 and Paper 2. Paper 1 does not allow technology, while Paper 2 allows technology. Both papers include compulsory short-response and extended-response questions.
Students complete an individual mathematical exploration that allows them to apply their mathematical knowledge and skills while investigating an area of mathematics of personal interest.
Yes. The Mathematical Exploration is worth 20% of the final Mathematics AA SL grade and is an important part of the overall assessment.
The IB offers four Mathematics courses: Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches (AA) SL, Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches (AA) HL, Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation (AI) SL, and Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation (AI) HL. Students can study only one Mathematics course as part of the Diploma Programme.
Mathematics AA places greater emphasis on mathematical concepts, analytical thinking, abstract reasoning, algebra, calculus, and mathematical argumentation, while Mathematics AI focuses more on mathematical applications, modelling, statistics, technology, and solving problems in real-world contexts.
Both courses develop analytical and conceptual mathematical understanding, but AA HL provides greater depth, breadth, and complexity, with a stronger emphasis on advanced mathematical concepts, analytical reasoning, abstract problem-solving, and mathematical argumentation.
AA HL is more focused on analytical approaches, mathematical structure, abstract reasoning, and advanced mathematical problem-solving, while AI HL places greater emphasis on applications, modelling, statistics, technology, and mathematics in real-world contexts.
Both focus on applying mathematics to practical and real-world contexts, but AI HL provides greater depth and complexity, requiring more advanced mathematical knowledge, problem-solving, modelling, and analytical skills.
Mathematics AA SL is particularly suitable for students who enjoy analytical problem-solving, have an interest in mathematics, and want to develop a strong foundation in mathematical concepts, reasoning, and applications while considering their academic and future study requirements.
The appropriate choice depends on the student’s interests, abilities, academic requirements, university or career plans, and preferred approach to mathematics. AA SL is a strong choice for students seeking analytical and conceptual mathematical understanding at the Standard Level.
The updated Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches (AA) and Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation (AI) courses will begin teaching in 2027, with the first assessment in May 2029.
The updates focus mainly on refining and streamlining the existing courses, rather than introducing a completely new structure. The new courses maintain continuity while placing continued emphasis on problem-solving, inquiry, mathematical reasoning, technology, and applying mathematics in appropriate contexts.
The updated courses have a more streamlined syllabus, with selected topics removed while maintaining the overall structure and focus of the current courses. The updates also include some changes to the Assessment criteria.
