Learning English while keeping up with school is a lot to manage. Students may understand a lesson in their first language but struggle to follow it, discuss it, or write about it in English. One-on-one tutoring gives them a patient, low-pressure place to practice speaking and to ask questions they might not ask in class.
Growing Stars tutors start with the student’s current level and goals, then connect English practice to the student’s real schoolwork, so language skills and grades improve together.
| Skill | What Students Practice | How It Helps at School |
|---|---|---|
| Speaking and Pronunciation | Conversation, clear pronunciation, and answering questions out loud | Participating in class discussions and presentations |
| Listening | Understanding teachers, classmates, and recorded audio | Following lessons and instructions |
| Reading | Vocabulary, comprehension, and reading strategies | Understanding textbooks and assignments in every subject |
| Writing | Sentences, paragraphs, and essays with clear organization | Completing written homework and tests |
| Grammar | Verb tenses, articles, prepositions, and sentence structure | Writing and speaking accurately |
| Academic Vocabulary | Subject-specific words in math, science, and social studies | Keeping up with content classes taught in English |
Many English learners mix up these two tenses. Compare:
I lived in Texas in 2019. (Simple past: a finished action at a specific time.)
I have lived in Texas since 2020. (Present perfect: an action that started in the past and continues now.)
If the sentence names a finished time, such as “in 2019” or “last year,” use the simple past.
If the action continues now, often with “since” or “for,” use the present perfect.
Tutors have students make sentences about their own experiences, which makes the rule easier to remember and use in conversation.
