Tutoring follows the current Cambridge International AS Level English Language and Literature (8695) syllabus applicable to the student’s examination year. The course combines English Language and Literature through two complementary components.
In the Language component, students develop the ability to produce effective, creative, accurate, and appropriate writing for a range of audiences and purposes. They explore different textual forms and genres, including advertisements, articles, editorials, news stories, reviews, blogs, investigative journalism, letters, podcasts, biographies, travel writing, diaries, essays, speeches, narrative writing, and descriptive writing. Students develop their understanding of language, form, structure, style, audience, purpose, genre, and context, while learning to adapt their writing to specific briefs and communicative situations.
In the Literature component, students study two set texts, each selected from a different section of Drama, Poetry, and Prose. Students develop close-reading, analysis, interpretation, and personal-response skills, exploring how writers’ choices of language, form, and structure shape meaning and effects. They also consider relevant historical, social, cultural, and literary contexts and develop independent opinions and interpretations of the texts they study. Set texts can change according to the examination year, so tutoring follows the relevant syllabus and set-text list for the student’s examination series.
The program supports the analytical and application-focused nature of Cambridge English Language and Literature, including effective writing for specific audiences and purposes, analysis of writers’ choices, close reading, interpretation, contextual understanding, independent literary response, and structured communication. Students also develop the ability to reflect on their own writing and apply appropriate linguistic and literary features to achieve specific effects.
Candidates answer two questions: one compulsory question from Section A and one question from a choice of three in Section B. The paper assesses students’ ability to write effectively, creatively, accurately, and appropriately for different audiences and purposes, as well as their ability to analyze how writers’ choices of form, structure, and language produce meaning and style.
