One-on-One Support for Digital SAT English Reading and Writing

The SAT Reading and Writing section covers four main areas: Information and Ideas, Craft and Structure, Expression of Ideas, and Standard English Conventions. Questions assess students’ ability to understand, analyze, and evaluate information and ideas in texts, understand words and phrases in context, revise writing for specific purposes, and apply the conventions of Standard English. Each short reading passage or passage pair is accompanied by a single multiple-choice question.

At Growing Stars, every student starts with a diagnostic test to identify areas that need attention. Tutors then build a focused plan around the student’s needs rather than spending equal time on every content area. Through one-on-one instruction and SAT-style practice questions, tutors help students strengthen reading comprehension, analyze and interpret texts, use evidence effectively, understand words and phrases in context, improve written expression, and apply Standard English conventions.

Because the SAT is a digital exam, online SAT Reading and Writing tutoring provides a learning environment that closely aligns with the actual testing experience. Tutors help students become familiar with the Digital SAT format, question types, time limits, and adaptive testing structure. Students can also take full-length digital mock exams on our digital testing platform, providing practice in a test-like environment and helping them build familiarity with the interface.

SAT Reading and Writing Content and Skills

The Digital SAT Reading and Writing section is organized into four content domains. Each domain covers specific skills and knowledge that students use to understand, analyze, revise, and edit texts. The section includes short passages ranging from 25 to 150 words, representing literature, history/social studies, the humanities, and science.

  • Information and Ideas: Focuses on comprehension, analysis, and reasoning. It assesses students’ ability to locate, interpret, evaluate, and integrate information and ideas from texts and informational graphics, including tables, bar graphs, and line graphs.
  • Craft and Structure: Focuses on comprehension, vocabulary, analysis, synthesis, and reasoning. It assesses students’ ability to understand and use high-utility words and phrases in context, evaluate texts rhetorically, and make connections between topically related texts.
  • Expression of Ideas: Focuses on revising texts to improve the effectiveness of written expression and meet specific rhetorical goals. It assesses students’ ability to make effective revisions to written material.
  • Standard English Conventions: Focuses on editing text to conform to core conventions of Standard English, including sentence structure, usage, and punctuation.

Test Overview & Exam Format

The SAT is administered digitally. The Reading and Writing section is adaptive, meaning the first module contains a broad mix of easy, medium, and hard questions. Based on performance in the first module, the second module will adapt to be either more or less difficult.

  • Duration: 64 minutes total, divided into two 32-minute modules.
  • Number of Questions: 54 questions total (27 questions per module). Each module includes questions from all four content domains, arranged generally from easiest to hardest within skill groups.
  • Question Types: Short reading passages or passage pairs, each followed by a single multiple-choice question.
  • Scoring: The Reading and Writing section contributes 200–800 points toward the SAT total score (which ranges from 400–1600).
