Master Standard Level Economics with Expert 1-on-1 Support

The IB Economics Standard Level (SL) Tutoring Program provides focused support to help students develop a strong understanding of economic theories and concepts, strengthen their Internal Assessment (Commentaries), and prepare effectively for external examinations.

The program is tailored to the requirements of the IB Economics SL syllabus, covering microeconomics, macroeconomics, and the global economy. Students develop skills in economic calculations, drawing and analyzing economic diagrams, applying economic theories and models to real-world situations, interpreting economic data, using precise economic terminology, and applying IB command terms effectively.

Tutors also help students apply economic theories and models to current real-world issues, structure well-developed economic responses, and critically evaluate economic issues, building confidence and accuracy for Internal Assessment and external examinations.

What You’ll Learn

The IB Economics SL curriculum is structured around three broad areas of economic activity. These areas examine economic choices made by consumers, producers, and governments in response to the fundamental economic problem of scarcity, and their effects on individuals and societies:

  • Microeconomics
  • Macroeconomics
  • The global economy

The DP Economics curriculum focuses on six real-world issues through nine key concepts:

  • Scarcity
  • Choice
  • Efficiency
  • Equity
  • Economic well-being
  • Sustainability
  • Change
  • Interdependence
  • Intervention

The Subtopic List includes all the topics listed in the IB Economics SL subject guide.

The Growing Stars IB Economics SL Tutoring Program is aligned with this approach and helps students build a connected and comprehensive understanding of economics by exploring economic models and theories in real-world contexts, while developing knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes that encourage them to think critically about economic issues and become responsible global citizens.

The program supports and prepares students for all IB Economics SL assessment objectives, including demonstrating knowledge and understanding, applying and analyzing economic concepts and theories, and synthesizing and evaluating economic information. Students receive targeted guidance for the Internal Assessment (IA) and external assessments, with practice in applying economic theories and models, analyzing real-world economic issues and data, and developing well-supported economic arguments and evaluations.

IB Economics SL is graded on a 1–7 scale, with 7 being the highest grade. The final grade is calculated based on two components: 70% comes from two external examination papers and 30% comes from the Internal Assessment.

The Internal Assessment consists of a portfolio of three commentaries, based on published extracts from news media. The commentaries are based on different units of the syllabus and use different key concepts as a lens for analysis.

Both SL and HL cover the core areas of microeconomics, macroeconomics, and the global economy and use the same nine key concepts and real-world focus. However, HL includes additional content, greater depth, and three external examination papers instead of two, with more extensive analytical and evaluation requirements. Both levels require the Internal Assessment portfolio of three commentaries.

Economics SL is ideal for students who have an interest in economics and want to develop a strong understanding of economic concepts, models, and theories while applying them to current real-world issues, all while maintaining a balanced academic workload within the IB Diploma Programme (DP).
