What You’ll Learn

The new IB Psychology course began teaching in August 2025, with the new assessment model applying from May 2027.

The IB DP Psychology curriculum is organized around three interconnected pillars: Concepts, Content, and Contexts. These elements are integrated to support the study and understanding of human behaviour. Students investigate different contexts using relevant psychological content and concepts.

Concepts Content Contexts
Bias Biological approach Health and well-being
Causality Cognitive approach Human development
Change Sociocultural approach Human relationships
Measurement Research methodology Learning and cognition
Perspective
Responsibility

The Subtopic List includes all the topics covered in the IB Psychology SL subject guide.
The programme supports and prepares students for all IB Psychology SL assessment objectives, including demonstrating knowledge and understanding of psychological concepts, content, contexts, theories, models, and research methodology. Students receive targeted guidance for the Internal Assessment (research proposal) and external assessments, with practice in applying psychological knowledge to new situations, analysing and interpreting research data, and developing well-supported arguments.

Assessment Overview

External Assessment – 70% of the final grade

  • Paper 1 – 35% of the final grade | 1 hour 30 minutes: Assesses the integration of psychological concepts, content, and contexts, including short-answer and concept-based extended-response questions.
  • Paper 2 – 35% of the final grade | 1 hour 30 minutes: Focuses on applying psychological concepts and content to research contexts, including class practicals and the evaluation of an unseen research study.

Internal Assessment – 30% of the final grade | 20 hours:

  • Students develop a research proposal using one of the research methods covered in the class practicals. The assessment is internally assessed by the teacher and externally moderated by the IB.
