Since August 2019, the IB Diploma Programme has offered four Mathematics courses: Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches (SL/HL) and Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation (SL/HL). Students may study only one Mathematics course as part of their diploma. These courses are designed to meet students’ different needs, interests, abilities, and university or career goals while developing mathematical knowledge, logical, critical, and creative thinking, abstraction, and generalisation skills. Students are also encouraged to appreciate the international, cultural, and historical perspectives of mathematics.
The IB Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation (AI) Standard Level (SL) course focuses on applying mathematics to a data-rich, technology-driven world, with an emphasis on modelling, statistics, technology, and real-world problem-solving. The updated IB DP Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation (AI) course will be launched in 2027, with first assessment in May 2029. (Scroll down to see the important changes applicable to the new course.) Students completing the current course with assessments in May 2027 or May 2028 will follow the existing course and assessment pattern. Tutoring support will remain aligned with the student’s applicable course, assessment requirements, and school curriculum.
The IB Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation (AI) SL course emphasises mathematical modelling, statistics, technology, problem-solving, and interpreting mathematics in meaningful real-world contexts. Students are encouraged to connect mathematical concepts with practical situations, solve real-world problems, and communicate and interpret their mathematical conclusions.
The Growing Stars IB Mathematics AI SL Tutoring Programme follows the IB curriculum to help students develop a strong understanding across the five core areas: Number and algebra, Functions, Geometry and trigonometry, Statistics and probability, and Calculus. The programme also develops investigational, problem-solving, modelling, and mathematical exploration skills, with a strong focus on using technology accurately and effectively to explore ideas and solve problems.
