The IB History Higher Level (HL) Tutoring Program provides rigorous support to help students develop strong historical understanding, strengthen their Historical Investigation, and prepare effectively for external examinations.

The program is tailored to the demanding requirements of the IB History HL syllabus, helping students develop skills in analysing and interpreting historical sources, constructing clear and coherent arguments, evaluating historical perspectives, assessing evidence, and applying key historical concepts and IB command terms effectively.

Tutors also help students apply historical knowledge to support analysis, structure well-developed responses, synthesise evidence from different sources, and critically engage with historical interpretations, building confidence and accuracy for the Historical Investigation and external examinations.

What You’ll Learn

Note: The new IB History course began teaching in August 2026, with the new assessment model applying from May 2028. Students taking the May 2027 assessment will follow the legacy course and assessment pattern. Our tutoring support aligns precisely with your applicable course and assessment year.

The IB History HL curriculum is structured around a comparative, multi-perspective approach to world history, encouraging students to develop historical knowledge while thinking critically about the past. The course examines political, economic, social, and cultural history and emphasises historical concepts, evidence, context, and multiple interpretations.

The legacy curriculum is organised into the following components:

  • Prescribed subjects
  • World history topics
  • HL regional depth studies
  • Historical Investigation

The DP History curriculum emphasises six key historical concepts: Change, Continuity, Causation, Consequence, Significance, and Perspectives.

The Growing Stars IB History HL Tutoring Program is aligned with this approach. We help students develop a connected and comprehensive understanding of history while strengthening historical thinking, critical analysis, source evaluation, research skills, and engagement with multiple perspectives.

Course and Assessment Updates (For Exams from May 2028)

New Course Overview

The updated IB DP History course is a flexible world history course designed to suit diverse school contexts. It explores global, regional, and national themes through a balanced combination of comparative, thematic, and in-depth study.

Changes to the Course Content

The updated IB DP History course maintains significant continuity with the current course while offering more diverse topic choices, including climate and resilience, innovation and transformation, and greater opportunities to explore the experiences of marginalized perspectives.

  • Redefined specified concepts: Four concepts—cause and consequence, continuity and change, perspectives, and significance—are integrated throughout the course.
  • Paired case studies: Prescribed subjects are redesigned as paired case studies, developing skills in using sources and exploring diverse evidence.
  • Global themes: World history topics are redesigned as global themes, developing skills in making connections across diverse historical examples.
  • Regional in-depth topics: Depth studies are redesigned as regional in-depth topics, developing skills in evaluating arguments through focused regional study.

Assessment Changes (May 2028 Onward)

  • Paper 1: Remains a source-based paper using paired case studies, with more authentic and open-ended questions based on an inquiry question and diverse sources.
  • Paper 2: Adds a new Section A with questions on specified concepts. Section B includes short-response and essay questions on the global theme, with fewer essay responses required.
  • Paper 3 (HL only): Streamlined to two essay questions instead of three, with a focus on evaluating arguments.
  • Time Allocation: Adjusted across papers to provide more thinking time during exams.
  • Internal Assessment: Remains a historical investigation of the student’s choice, with the reflection section removed and greater focus on the inquiry question, sources and perspectives, synthesis, and evaluation (using a maximum of seven sources).
