General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) English aims to develop skills in both spoken and written English, as well as the ability to read a wide range of texts, critically, fluently, and with good understanding. Students should apply a wide vocabulary, knowledge, and understanding of grammatical terminology, and linguistic conventions for reading, writing and speaking. In addition, students should be able to listen to and understand spoken language and use spoken Standard English effectively.
The course specifies that students should read and be assessed on high-quality, challenging texts from the 19th to 21st centuries. Texts across a range of genres must include literature, extended literary nonfiction, and other writing such as essays, reviews, and journalism. There is a significant stress on content, structure, and the quality of language.
The course covers Presenting information and ideas in spoken language; Writing effectively for different purposes and audiences; Producing clear and coherent text; Comparing Texts; Writing for impact; Grammatical and Structural features; Critical Reading and Comprehension, which includes, identifying and interpreting themes, ideas, and information in a range of literature and other high-quality writing; and Summary and Synthesis, which includes, evaluation of a writer’s choice of vocabulary.
